Data centers that provide colocation, also known as multi-tenant data centers or MTDCs, have evolved to offer much more than just space for rent and installation assistance. As an Internet Service Provider and an operator-owned company, customer service has always been at the forefront of Data Foundry’s offering. We have always provided a consultative approach to guide our customers toward an infrastructure setup that is in their best interest. As organizations large and small shift to the cloud for storage and the use of applications, there is a greater need for interconnectivity, network management and security services on behalf of the data center. We have evolved to offer services in all of these areas, and we consider ourselves our customers’ IT partner.
In recent years, companies have realized the benefits and savings colocation provides through reduced capital expenditure. Instead of building their own data center and worrying about access to network providers, 100% uptime, staffing and physical security, many companies have opted to colocate in carrier-neutral data centers as part of their infrastructure strategy.
These days, some companies are seeing even more benefits of colocation through a provider’s suite of managed services. They look to their colocation provider to help them set up private connections to the cloud, implement cloud storage, and to help them scale in order to grow their business. Companies are looking for a colocation provider that is a strategic IT partner rather than simply a provider of power, space and cooling. Not all data centers are created equal when it comes to their focus on customer service, and it’s more important than ever that companies consider a colocation provider’s managed services and the availability of skilled, onsite staff. Onsite staff should be able to lend a hand, provide expertise or completely take over an operation if desired.
This shift in thinking can be seen in a study by IDG Research. The data indicates 31% of organizations surveyed currently run their entire data center operations out of multi-tenant data centers. Forty-one percent of organizations currently leveraging colocation, or are planning to, predicted their entire data center operations would be based in MTDCs within the following 12 months.
